Joker is incorrect it's not free. You need the carte vitale already described to prove that you're covered by the state (tax payers and their dependents I believe are those who get the card). Even with the carte vitale it's not 100% covered but it is extremely cheap compared to other countries. My ex-husband only had to pay 50 euros to get a cleaning and inspection of a broken tooth (not the appt to actually get it fixed). From what I was told even if you have to pay 100% of the cost it's still cheaper then the States (not sure about the UK).
Is Dental Care free in France?
if your a resident in france then you need a 'carte vitale',its a medical insurance card basically so whether its a dentist or a doctor you need you will pay but with this card you can claim most of the money back.
Reply:It's free for people who are at least registered at the French Social Security and depending on the care, you will need a mutual insurance.
If you're foreigner, you should ask to your social security or your insurance if you could benefit from your insurance abroad, maybe they will give you an international certificate that you will have to show to the dentist so he can make a refund file.
.
Reply:It's not free. You have to pay first and then you get most of your money back thanks to the "sécurité sociale" (social care). The "carte vitale" is not compulsory, it just quickens the payback. You have to be a tax payer to get it.
